Dating apps for serious relationships compared

This comparison centers on a single question: how well does an app serve people looking for a serious relationship? Every app is rated across eight criteria, each from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong), with extra weight on seriousness, verification and fairness.

To be honest: not every well-known app is built for this goal. Tinder and Badoo are strong on reach but clearly lean casual. The relationship-focused ones are above all embla and Hinge, each in its own way. One exception we state openly: embla is not yet in the App Store, so its scores rest on its concept and pricing model rather than our own use, and they stay provisional until we recheck them after launch.

Our take

On total points embla leads ahead of Dua and Hinge, with the caveat that embla’s rating is provisional until launch. Dua ranks above Hinge because Albanian fit counts too; on seriousness and usability Hinge is ahead. If you want to start today, begin with Hinge if you have no cultural focus, and with Dua if you want an Albanian one.

Which app for which situation

If you are looking for a relationship today and need no cultural focus, Hinge is the calmest place to start: a user base that leans committed, the best usability in the field and a free version you can search seriously with. If you are specifically looking for an Albanian partner, Dua is the app with the largest fitting community today. If you want the no-swiping concept, join the embla waitlist as well and decide after launch.

Bumble fits if you are a woman who wants to make the first move yourself, or if Hinge shows too few people where you live. Tinder and Badoo are not a first choice for a focused search for a relationship. In small towns or in the Balkans, though, they are often the apps where anyone is around at all, and then what matters most is that your intent is in your profile.

Questions about the comparison

Why is embla ranked first when the app has not launched yet?
Because the order follows the average of the eight criteria alone, and on its concept and pricing model embla scores highest there. That rating is explicitly provisional: it is not based on our own use, and after launch we will recheck it in the app, criterion by criterion.
Why is Dua ahead of Hinge when Hinge seems more serious?
The overall score weighs all eight criteria equally, including Albanian fit, where Dua has 5 points and Hinge 1. On seriousness and usability Hinge is ahead. Which criteria matter more to you decides which of the two suits you better.
Which app should I start with today if I want a relationship?
With Hinge if you have no cultural focus, with Dua if you want an Albanian one. You can try both without a subscription, and both have users who lean more towards a relationship than on the big swipe apps.
