By its rules and model, embla is more clearly built for a relationship. There is no swiping, every day starts with a question, and contact only happens through a specific line or a specific photo. Bumble is a swipe app with one well-known rule: between a woman and a man, she writes first. Intentions there are mixed.
To be fair about it: embla isn’t in the App Store yet, there is only a waitlist. What can be compared today are rules, cost and verification. How many people near you will be there and how the conversations will go, nobody can say before launch. Bumble, on the other hand, you can open today, with a large reach.

What can be compared before launch
A head-to-head with an app that hasn’t come out yet needs a clear line. For embla we compare what is fixed: how contact starts, what is free, what the subscription costs and how profiles are checked. embla’s scores in the table are based on that concept and model, not on a living community.
Everything that only comes with people remains open. How many in your city will join, what the balance of women and men looks like, how serious the conversations really get: that only shows after launch. With Bumble it has become visible over years, with embla not yet.
So this comparison won’t tell you where you will meet someone faster today. It shows which setting, with which rules, works towards a relationship. That question comes before every sign-up, including on apps that have been around for a long time.
Intent: swiping versus a daily question
Bumble works with swiping. You see photos and a few details, decide quickly, and if the interest is mutual you match. It is familiar and fast. It also means the first decision almost always comes down to looks.
embla drops swiping altogether. Every day there is a daily question, and once you answer it, you see the others’ answers at a table with eight seats. So you meet people first through a line they wrote today. The conversation has something to be about from the very start.
Whether that mainly draws people with serious intentions remains to be seen. The hurdle is built in, though: anyone who just wants a quick look has to write something first. On Bumble that work is yours, and it helps to state your intent early and clearly in your profile.
The first contact
On Bumble the match comes first, then the first message. Between a woman and a man she writes first, and if the chat stays empty past a deadline, the match expires. That keeps inboxes from overflowing, but it adds time pressure. What you talk about is up to you.
On embla every contact is tied to something specific. A spark is a wordless like, attached to exactly one line or one photo of the other person. A reply spark is a text responding to one of their lines, and it lands straight in their chat. If the other person writes back, you are connected.
The difference is the reason to write. On Bumble you have to find your first line yourself, on embla you are answering something the other person wrote. That makes the start easier. Being honest and specific is still down to you.
Cost: what stays free
Bumble is free to use and makes money from paid tiers and one-off extras for more attention. If you want to see who has already liked you, you need a subscription there. That is common, but it means part of the interest in you sits behind a paywall.
On embla, ‘who likes you’ is always free for everyone. Five sparks a day are free, plus one reply spark. embla+ costs €8.99 a month, less for three or six months, and includes unlimited sparks, five reply sparks a day and a table that keeps refilling, up to 100 people a day. There is also a day pass for €1.99.
embla has no paid promotion such as a boost or a spotlight. There is only the wildfire, priority for one day within other people’s search radius, with no promise of how often you will be seen. That is why embla is ahead on cost in our ratings. How far the free model carries in daily use will show after launch.
Safety: how profiles are checked
Bumble offers optional selfie verification and marks profiles that pass. That helps, but since the check isn’t mandatory, you will also meet unverified profiles there. In our ratings Bumble sits mid-table on verification.
embla verifies through photo matching: a selfie is checked against the profile photos. That targets one of the best-known deceptions in online dating, someone else’s pictures. embla gets full marks on verification in our ratings, and one point more than Bumble on privacy.
No check replaces your own rules. Stay in the app’s chat at first, never send money, and meet somewhere public the first time. A short video call before the date tells you within minutes whether the face matches the photos.
Reach and background
On reach, Bumble is clearly ahead. The app is big, well known and widely used in many cities. embla gets the lowest score of this head-to-head here, because there is no user pool yet that you could rely on.
On Albanian fit it is the other way round. embla is an Albanian dating app, made from the outset for people who are specifically looking for someone with an Albanian background. Bumble has no cultural focus, so you meet Albanians there more or less by chance.
With embla+ you can also search in more detail, for example by background, intent, religion or wish for children. Distance, age and language, by contrast, are always free to set. How many people will end up at the table within your radius is something only the launch will answer.
Who each app suits
Bumble suits you if you want to start today, if a large choice matters to you, and if you are a woman who wants to write the first line yourself. If you use Bumble to find a relationship, put your intent in your profile, because the app won’t filter for it on your behalf.
embla suits you if you are specifically looking for someone with an Albanian background, if swiping wears you out, and if verified profiles and a free ‘who likes you’ matter to you. Until launch, that means the waitlist at embla-app.com.
The two don’t rule each other out. If you want to search today, use Bumble with a clear intent and sign up for the waitlist alongside. After launch it will quickly become clear where the better conversations happen.
Verdict
Judged by rules and model, we recommend embla for a serious relationship. No swiping, contact only through a specific line or photo, photo-match verification and ‘who likes you’ free for everyone. It is a setting that works towards conversations, not snap judgements.
Today, Bumble is the choice if you want to search right away or need a large pool. There, the rules are: intent in your profile, an eye on the deadline, no money for visibility.
If you are specifically looking for an Albanian partner, join the embla waitlist and decide after launch where your time is better spent.
