This is a meeting of two apps that are both built against swiping, and on seriousness they are level in our ratings. Hinge relies on profiles with prompts whose answers you respond to directly. embla relies on a daily question, and contact only happens through a specific line or a specific photo. Both want every conversation to have a reason to start.
The big difference is time. Hinge has been around for years, with tried-and-tested design and users who are looking for a relationship. embla hasn’t launched in the App Store yet. Rules, cost and verification can be compared, and there embla is ahead on several points. If you want to start today, though, only Hinge is an option.

Two answers to the same fatigue
Hinge and embla share a diagnosis: fast swiping on photos rarely leads to conversations that last. Hinge turned that into the promise that it is designed to be deleted. embla drops swiping altogether. Both filter, before anyone signs up, who feels addressed.
With Hinge that effect has become visible over the years, and it is seen as one of the most relationship-minded apps in the field. With embla it is so far an intention in the design. Whether it shows up in the user base will only become clear once people are actually searching there.
embla’s scores in the table are therefore based on concept and model. Hinge’s are based on an app you can open today. That doesn’t weaken the ratings, but keep it in mind as you read.
Profile prompts versus a daily question
A Hinge profile is made of photos and short prompts that you answer once in your own words. Those answers stay until you change them. Anyone who sees your profile reads what you wrote about yourself at some point, often with some care.
On embla there is a new daily question every day. Once you answer it, you see the others’ answers at a table with eight seats. So you meet people through a line written today, not through a text that has sat in a profile for months. That can feel more spontaneous and less polished.
Both approaches have their appeal. Hinge shows you how someone describes themselves when they have had time to think. embla shows you how someone answers a question they read for the first time today.
How interest becomes a conversation
On Hinge a like is aimed at one specific photo or answer, and you can add a comment. The other person sees your like and decides whether to respond. Only then does the chat open. On the free plan the number of likes per day is capped.
On embla a spark is a wordless like, attached to a line or a photo, five a day for free and unlimited with embla+. A reply spark is a text responding to one of the other person’s lines and lands straight in their chat. If the other person writes back, you are connected. You get one reply spark a day for free, five with embla+.
At heart the two approaches are very similar: contact hangs on something concrete, and the written word is scarce. The difference is the sequence. On Hinge the chat only opens once someone responds to your like, on embla your reply spark is already in their chat, and their answer turns it into a connection.
Cost: who gets to see who likes you
Hinge is free to use and makes money from paid tiers, and its premium is known as relatively pricey. The easy overview of everyone who already likes you sits behind the paywall there. On top of that come one-off extras that let you make your interest stand out.
On embla, ‘who likes you’ is always free for everyone. There is no boost, spotlight or any other paid promotion, only the wildfire: priority for one day within other people’s search radius, with no promise of how often you will be seen. embla+ costs €8.99 a month, less for three or six months, and the day pass €1.99.
That is why embla is two points ahead of Hinge on cost in our ratings. It says something about the rules, not about whether you will ever need to pay. You can get far on Hinge for free. What stays free on embla is clearly defined, and how far it takes you in daily use will show after launch.
Safety: how real are the profiles?
Hinge offers optional selfie verification and marks profiles that pass. Since it isn’t mandatory, you will also see unverified profiles there. In our ratings Hinge sits mid-table on verification.
embla verifies through photo matching, with a selfie checked against the profile photos. That targets one of the best-known deceptions in online dating, someone else’s pictures. Our ratings give embla full marks on verification and one point more than Hinge on privacy.
What you need to do yourself is the same on both apps. Stay in the app’s chat at first, never send money, and meet somewhere public the first time. Anyone pushing early to move to another messenger rarely has a good reason.
What stays open before launch
On usability Hinge is ahead in our ratings. The app has grown over years, it is clearly laid out, and you find your way around without explanation. The same goes for reach: Hinge is well used, especially in cities, while embla has no user pool yet.
On Albanian fit it is the other way round. embla is an Albanian dating app, Hinge has no cultural focus. With embla+ you can also search in more detail, for example by background, intent, religion or wish for children. Distance, age and language are always free to set.
What stays open is what only people can answer: how many will be at the table near you, how balanced the numbers of women and men are, how the conversations go. Anyone giving you a figure for that today is guessing.
Who each app suits
Hinge suits you if you want to search now, live in a city and enjoy writing a profile with real sentences in it. The app is proven, calm and geared towards relationships. It has no cultural focus.
embla suits you if you are specifically looking for someone with an Albanian background, if verified profiles matter to you, and if you don’t want to pay to see who likes you. Until launch, that means the waitlist at embla-app.com.
You don’t have to choose before there is anything to choose between. If you are searching today, use Hinge and join the embla waitlist. After launch you will see where conversations get more serious.
Verdict
Both apps belong at the top for a serious search, and on intent nothing separates them in our ratings. Judged by rules and model, embla is ahead: photo-match verification, ‘who likes you’ free for everyone, no paid promotion and a clear Albanian focus.
Today we recommend Hinge to anyone who wants to start now. Its usability is the best in the field, its users are looking for commitment, and the free version is enough for a serious search.
If you are specifically looking for an Albanian partner, bet on embla and bridge the time until launch with Hinge. If you don’t need a cultural focus, Hinge already serves you well.
